O Programa de Pós-graduação em Oceanografia promove nesta terça-feira, 16 de maio, às 15:30, a palestra “Seven hazard tales from the Caribbean coast of Colombia”com o Dr. Nelson Guillermo Rangel Buitrago (Universidad del Atlántico, Colombia). O evento será realizado no Auditório do Centro Socioeconômico – CSE.
Resumo: A scientific consensus exists regarding the significant impacts of global climate change processes over coastal zones. These includes sea level rise, variability in the patterns of rainfall and runoff and changes in frequency, intensity, and duration of storms, among others. The study of the relationships existing between littoral transformation, climate change, and coastal hazards represents the first step in the design of adaptation plans for coastal zones. The Caribbean coast of Colombia is a developing area divided into eight Departments including 28 Municipalities with 4,049,867 inhabitants mainly concentrated in four commercial and tourist cities: Barranquilla, Cartagena, Santa Marta, and Riohacha. Due to better security conditions and the recent Peace agreements, this area has become a popular destination for many national and international tourists attracted by tropical rural, remote and urban sites because of beach-related activities and local entertainment. At present, tourism represents one of the most important economic activities, and development capacity appears to be almost limitless. However, some coastal hazards have become a serious problem, rising in magnitude and dominance along the Caribbean Coastline of Colombia. This important area of the country is undergoing serious coastal hazards related to a multiplicity of factors contrasted by their degree of influence and magnitude. By means of this talk, we want to tell seven stories illustrating how the various coastal hazards have influenced the development of this region.
